CleanMyMac Space Lens review

This is my quick review about CleanMyMac Space Lens. A new feature in CleanMyMac. In my review about CleanMyMac you can read I’m very positive about this management tool for keeping your Mac running like new. The functionality of the software is easy to use. It offers a lot of different tools and gives you control over what it does. And if you are not interested in control, but you are just looking for a simple solution you can use the automatic functionality that will do the full clean up for you. No hassle, just results.

A new tab has been added: Space Lens (or Ruimtezoeker in Dutch)

If you are however interested in more control and more insight in the things that are slowing your Mac down you can dive in to the different modules that CleanMyMac offers. One feature was missing that was included in the older version CleanMyMac X (read my review about CleanMyMac X here); the Space Lens. This much loved feature gives you an easy to use and understand overview of what files are using up you drive space. But, there is good news: CleanMyMac is updated and Space Lens is back!

Space Lens in CleanMyMac

With the latest update Space Lens is back in CleanMyMac. Luckily, it works just as good and easy as it did in CleanMyMac X. Space Lens is added on top of the existing modules. Therefore, we still have all the important modules on board:

  • Cleanup
  • Protection
  • Performance
  • Applications
  • My Clutter

Space Lens is added and found in the main menu under the ‘My Clutter’ button. In the Dutch language version I use the function is called ‘Ruimtezoeker’, which translates to Space Finder.

Choose the drive or location and start a scan

When you open the Space Lens you first have to run a Scan to examen the drive. By default it will look at your personal folder. But, you can also let it scan your complete hard drive or any external drive that is connected to your Mac.

Using CleanMyMac Space Lens to clear space

After scanning you will be shown a visual representation of folders that are filling up your hard drive. The bigger the bubble, the more space it is taking up. This makes it easy to choose where to start.

After scanning you will get a visual representation of your drive

By clicking on the bubble you are shown an other bubble-representation of the sub-folders. You can choose to delete complete folders or you can keep drilling down to lower levels. In lower levels you can delete individual files. Simple as that.

Drilling down makes it easy to find the files and remove them

Conclusion

CleanMyMac was already a great tool for keeping your Mac running like new. But by bringing back the loved functionality that Space Lens offered it has gotten even better. It is also a testament to MacPaw’s dedication to keeping the software up to date and relevant. They keep adding new functionality that is offered to existing customers for free.
